Does it pay off to buy a cheap printer?

Cheap is good, or so we believe. But as a consumer, you must always be careful when you buy an inexpensive item. Take cars, for example. You may think you're saving money by purchasing a cheap car, but ironically, you could end up paying more in the long run through expensive repairs.

Printers are no different. I have purchased cheap printers from manufacturers like HP and Dell, thinking I'm getting a great deal on a brand name printer. While in most cases, such printers did function adequately, the real cost came in the form of printer ink. The printer may be inexpensive, but the ink cartridges frequently cost $20, $30, or $40 or more. What's more, the cartridges run out of ink very quickly, forcing you to purchase more and more ink as you continue to use the device.

These days, I always check out how much a printer's ink cartridges cost before purchasing a printer. This information is easy enough to obtain online. You should look not just at the cost of the ink cartridge, but how many pages each cartridge will pay. A relatively expensive cartridge, for example, may end up being a good deal if it's capable of printing 500 pages or more.

So what should you do if you've already purchased a cheap printer and don't want to buy a new printer anytime soon? In that case, you're stuck with having to purchase ink for that printer, however, there are certain tactics you can use to pay less.

One is to purchase ink online from discount ink stores such as Inkfarm. If you buy remanufactured cartridges, you can often also use an Inkfarm coupon for additional savings of up to 15% off. If you prefer to buy new ink, you should avoid OEM cartridges to get a better deal.

Some people also use ink refill kits to refill old cartridges. This takes a bit of work and you may need to go through a trial and error stage before you get the process right. But once you're competent at refilling ink cartridges, this by far would be the most cost effective way to get ink for your printer. Most cartridges can be used a number of times before they need to be recycled. It is important to note that refilling ink and thereby recycling old cartridges, you are also being more environmentally friendly.

That said, refilling ink is not for everybody. For most people the quickest and easiest way to get new ink cheaply is by buying them online at well-known discount ink shops like Inkfarm.
